AUDIENCE for a book about cocktails

Why, other than the fact that my publisher wants a book on cocktails by September, would I write such a thing?  Who is it for?

As our own Georg Christoph Lichtenberg says,

It is almost impossible to write anything good without imagining someone, or a certain group of people, whom one is addressing. In 999 cases out of a thousand it at any rate greatly facilitates the execution.  — L.76

The difficulty for me is truly deciding who needs another book on cocktails?  There are hundreds out there, with more being published every month. What would an AUDIENCE be looking for that they couldn't already get in someone else's book?  In other words, can I define a need, a niche, that I can legitimately fill?

I know that if I were a real author, it wouldn't matter.  "Take the money and run" is probably a more viable way to think about it, but even in my advanced age I have ethical qualms about creating something for no reason other than cash. (I know, it's a failing.)

From my Cocktails WASTE BOOK:

The AUDIENCE for this book is probably...

  • people who will order a Manhattan in a restaurant

  • people who would like to move beyond rum & coke, gin & tonic

  • people who are perhaps intimidated by swanky cocktail menus at bars and restaurants

  • people who would like to define their own tastes while broadening their horizons

  • people who would like to have a more sophisticated home bar

That's enough to be going on with, wouldn't you think?  More work is required.
