Have a couple of treasure troves of the world’s flora and fauna:
Biodiversity Heritage Library Albums: An astonishing range of illustrations, from European butterflies to British mammals to Figures of remarkable forms of polycystins, or allied organisms, in the Barbados chalk deposit. (Check out that last one for surreal structural inspiration. STEAL FROM THE BEST.)
Also from the BHL, is a photostream labeled simply and adorably Everyone’s photos. You won’t know where to begin… or to stop.
The BHL also has collections of texts that are free to browse.
We also have The History of Four-footed Beasts and Serpents (1658) from the Public Domain Review, a collection of assumptions about the planet’s wildlife that amuses us today but must have been oohed and aahed over back in the day.
And finally, the Internet Archive Book Images. You will need to alert a friend to come find you if you don’t resurface after an hour or more.
