GALAXY: part 2

Having had my brain electrified by the idea of a 100-ft long installation of glowing rings in the middle of Alchemy, I set about scribbling notes in my notebook.

The first thing I realized was that if the project was going to be 100 feet long, it would require hundreds of rings. That meant that the cost would be enormous, so I would need to do it in phases, over multiple burns/years. (Also I would need to jump into the Art Fundraiser for the first time in four years.)

Moreover, I realized that I would need to form a team to help construct, install, maintain, and break down the piece.

And my final note on that first pages of concerns and considerations:

  • Nothing I’ve written here is in stone.

Indeed, how could it be? You will notice that I gave no thought to how this was actually going to function, i.e., hundreds of little rings, each (as far as I could tell) with its own little battery back — was I going to stoop down and turn on hundreds of these suckers every night? (And who was going to turn them off at 6:00 a.m.?)

No, that problem will be solved later. First I had to decide what it was going to look like.

With some ABORTIVE ATTEMPTS done, I was ready to move forward.
