Countdown: 5!
/We’re at 5 in our countdown to publication of Lichtenbergianism: procrastination as a creative strategy, and today we look at Precept #5: SUCCESSIVE APPROXIMATION.
This is a very simple Precept: because only people like Mozart or Shakespeare ever get it right the first time, the rest of us have to nudge our work towards perfection. (Spoiler alert: there is no “perfection.” We can only nudge it towards ABANDONMENT.)
Baby steps. Incremental improvement. Total Quality Management. Whatever you call it, it’s what all artists do: start with an ABORTIVE ATTEMPT, step back and take a look at it via GESTALT, then set about fixing it through SUCCESSIVE APPROXIMATION.
